  19. WHAT IS WINPRINT?
  20.  
  21.      WinPrint is a Windows shareware application that allows
  22.      you to easily print ASCII text files from within
  23.      Windows.  It allows you to specify headers and footers
  24.      with page numbers, fonts, margins, landscape v.
  25.      portrait mode, and "multiple pages up" printing.  See
  26.      the WINPRINT.HLP file for a more complete description.
  27.      
  28.      WinPrint was designed from the very beginning to be a
  29.      tool for printing plain text files.  Version 1.3 and
  30.      Version 1.4 do not support the printing of graphics,
  31.      word processing documents, or spreadsheets.  My goal
  32.      from has been to keep WinPrint as small, efficient, and
  33.      simple as possible.
  34.      
  35.      If you want to print graphics use PaintBrush it works
  36.      just fine.  If you want to print your word processing
  37.      documents, use your word processor, and if you want to
  38.      print spreadsheets use your spreadsheet package; they
  39.      all print nicely.  But if you want to print plain ASCII
  40.      text files use WinPrint!
  41.  
  42.      The WINPRINT.HLP file contains all the documentation
  43.      you will need.  It also contains information on how to
  44.      register WinPrint.
  45.      
  46. GETTING STARTED
  47.      
  48.      A few quick notes on what is needed to run WinPrint:
  49.      
  50.      Under Windows 3.0 and 3.0a you need the following
  51.      Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) in your path:
  52.           
  53.           TDUTIL.DLL     - WinPrint Support DLL
  54.           COMMDLG.DLL    - Microsoft Common Dialogs DLL
  55.           SHELL.DLL - Microsoft Shell Support DLL
  56.      
  57.      You will also need the main WINPRINT.EXE executable
  58.      file and the help file (WINPRINT.HLP).
  59.      
  60.      I recommend that you create a "WINAPPS" directory off
  61.      of your root directory in which you place all of your
  62.      "small" Windows applications such as WinPrint.  Copy
  63.      the above files into this directory and make sure that
  64.      the directory is in your path statement.
  65.      
  66.      You can now run WinPrint just as you would any Windows
  67.      application.  See the section in the WINPRINT.HLP file
  68.      titled STARTING WINPRINT for more details.
  69.      
  70. NOTES TO USERS OF WINPRINT 1.3
  71.  
  72.      WinPrint 1.32 was designed Windows 2.x application.  It
  73.      worked correctly under Windows 3.0 because it adhered
  74.      to Microsoft's programming guidelines for Windows.
  75.      
  76.      WinPrint 1.4 has been designed as a Windows 3.x
  77.      application.  It takes advantage of features found only
  78.      in Windows 3.0 and above.  As such, it will not run on
  79.      Windows 2.x, and will not operate correctly with
  80.      printer drivers that have not been updated to the
  81.      Windows 3.0 specification.
  82.      
  83.      Versions of Windows previous to Windows 3.0 provided no
  84.      way for applications to store printer settings
  85.      "locally."  For example any change made to printer
  86.      settings from within an application (such as landscape
  87.      mode) were made system wide.  The Windows 3.0 printer
  88.      driver specification allows for applications to change
  89.      printer settings locally.  WinPrint 1.4 takes advantage
  90.      of this, and adheres to the policy that no application
  91.      except Control Panel can make system wide printer
  92.      setting changes.
  93.      
  94.      One of the biggest bugs in WinPrint 1.32 was that it
  95.      incorrectly selected fonts.  For example you would tell
  96.      it to print using a 10 point font, but it would
  97.      actually use a font much smaller.  This has been
  98.      corrected in WinPrint 1.4.
  99.      
  100.      Because of the changes to WinPrint 1.4 are fundamental
  101.      in nature, saved configurations from earlier versions
  102.      will not be converted.  It might have been possible to
  103.      do a partial conversion of your settings to the new
  104.      format, but there are so many new features and bug
  105.      fixes in 1.4 that the conversion would have been
  106.      inaccurate at best.  The decision was made that it
  107.      would be easier for the user to re-create your settings
  108.      than to try to figure out what was converted correctly
  109.      and what was not.
  110.      
  111.      WinPrint 1.32 saved all configuration information in
  112.      the WIN.INI file.  WinPrint 1.4 saves all of it's
  113.      configuration information in the WINPRINT.INI file.
  114.      The format of the information has changed, but when
  115.      WinPrint 1.4 is run on a machine for the first time, it
  116.      copies your registration information to the
  117.      WINPRINT.INI file.  Once you run WinPrint 1.4 for the
  118.      first time you can delete all WinPrint related sections
  119.      from your WIN.INI file if you wish.
  120.      
  121.      I have also changed the format of WinPrint registration
  122.      numbers.  WinPrint 1.4 will correctly decode your 1.32
  123.      registration number and convert it to the new format.
  124.      This has been done for several reasons:
  125.      
  126.      1) The old WinPrint registration number was up to 12
  127.      characters long and was too difficult to enter.
  128.      
  129.      2) The new number format allows me to more easily track
  130.      what version of WinPrint a user is using.
  131.  
  132. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  133.      Version 1.40 of WinPrint has been extensively tested.
  134.      However there are a few problems that are known and are
  135.      not worth the time it would take to fix at this point:
  136.      
  137.      SOME WINDOWS 3.0 PRINTER DRIVERS ARE BUGGY
  138.           Many of the Dot Matrix printer drivers shipped
  139.      with Windows 3.0 are buggy, and most do not in fact
  140.      conform the the Windows 3.0 printer driver
  141.      specification.  Because of this you will not be able to
  142.      change printer settings from WinPrint with these
  143.      drivers.  See the WINPRINT.HLP file for more
  144.      information on this.
  145.      
  146.      POSTSCRIPT EMULATORS REPORT INCORRECT PAGE SIZE
  147.           Several PostScript addon products and emulators
  148.      incorrectly report page size to Windows.  The result is
  149.      that when WinPrint is set up so all margins are set to
  150.      0.00", some text is printed "off page."  If you
  151.      encounter this problem simply increase all four margins
  152.      until the problem goes away (usually 0.10" works).
  153.      This problem has been noted on the HP LaserJet IIIsi in
  154.      PostScript mode and the PacificPage Postscript
  155.      cartridge for the HP LaserJet II.
  156.      
  157.      DOT MATRIX DRIVERS SELECT FONTS INCORRECTLY
  158.           Some Windows 3.0 dot matrix printer drivers allow
  159.      you to set the resoultion that they print graphics at.
  160.      When these drivers are set at their lowest resolution
  161.      settings they print some fonts too big.  The easy work
  162.      around is to set the driver up to use higher resolution
  163.      or print only with device based fonts (see WINPRINT.HLP
  164.      for more details).
  165.  
  166. LICENSE INFORMATION
  167.  
  168.      WinPrint is not and has never been public domain
  169.      software, nor is it free software.  WinPrint is a
  170.      commercial application distributed as shareware.
  171.  
  172.      Non-licensed users are granted a limited license
  173.      (registration) to use WinPrint on a 21-day trial basis
  174.      for the purpose of determining whether WinPrint is
  175.      suitable for their needs.  The use of WinPrint, except
  176.      for the initial 21-day trial, requires registration.
  177.      The use of unlicensed (un-registered) copies of
  178.      WinPrint by any person, business, corporation,
  179.      government agency or any other entity is strictly
  180.      prohibited.
  181.  
  182.      A single user license permits a user to use WinPrint
  183.      only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  184.      program on different computers, but may not use the
  185.      program on more than one computer at the same time.
  186.  
  187.      No one may modify or patch the WinPrint executable and
  188.      documentation files in any way, including but not
  189.      limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
  190.      reverse engineering the program.
  191.  
  192.      A limited license is granted to copy and distribute
  193.      WinPrint only for the trial use of others, subject to
  194.      the above limitations, and also the following:
  195.  
  196.      1)   WinPrint must be copied in unmodified form,
  197.           complete with the file containing this license
  198.           information.
  199.  
  200.      2)   The WinPrint product consists of the following
  201.           files:
  202.           WINPRINT.EXE, TDUTIL.DLL, README.TXT, and
  203.           WINPRINT.HLP.  All of these files must be copied
  204.           in unmodified form.
  205.  
  206.      3)   WinPrint may not be distributed in conjunction
  207.           with any other product with out a specific license
  208.           to do so from Charles E. Kindel, Jr.
  209.  
  210.      4)   No fee, charge, or other compensation may be
  211.           requested or accepted, except as authorized below:
  212.  
  213.           A)   Operators of electronic bulletin board
  214.                systems (sysops) may make WinPrint available
  215.                for downloading only as long as the above
  216.                conditions are met.  An overall or time-
  217.                dependent charge for the use of the bulletin
  218.                board system is permitted as long as there is
  219.                not a specific charge for the download of
  220.                WinPrint.
  221.      
  222.           B)   Vendors may charge a disk duplication and
  223.                handling fee, which may not exceed eight
  224.                dollars.
  225.  
  226. LIMITED WARRANTY
  227.  
  228.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. guarantees your satisfaction
  229.      with this product for a period of 90 days from the date
  230.      of original purchase.  If you are unsatisfied with
  231.      WinPrint within that time period contact Charles E.
  232.      Kindel, Jr. via normal or electronic mail for a full
  233.      refund.
  234.  
  235.      Charles E. Kindel, Jr. warrants that the program will
  236.      perform in substantial compliance with the
  237.      documentation supplied with the software product.  If a
  238.      significant defect in the product is found, the
  239.      Purchaser may obtain a refund.  In no event will such a
  240.      refund exceed the purchase price of the product.
  241.  
  242.      EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, CHARLES E. KINDEL, JR.
  243.      DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
  244.      INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
  245.      MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE,
  246.      WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE
  247.      DEFECTIVE, THE PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE
  248.      ENTIRE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR
  249.      CORRECTION AND ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.
  250.      IN NO EVENT WILL CHARLES E. KINDEL, JR. BE LIABLE FOR
  251.      ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION
  252.      DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS
  253.      INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION AND THE
  254.      LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE INABILITY TO USE
  255.      THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF CHARLES E. KINDEL, JR. HAS BEEN
  256.      ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  258.      Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  259.      your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to
  260.      its contents.
  261.  
  262. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  263.  
  264.      Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is
  265.      subject to restrictions as set forth in subdivision
  266.      (b)(3)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer
  267.      Software clause at 252.227-7013.
